MOUND MUSEUM QUARTERLY REPORT

OUR BURIED VALLEY AQUIFER — The Mound Science and Energy Museum (MSEM) is pleased to announce that Mike Ekberg, from The Miami Conservancy District (MCD), will be the guest speaker at our next WEDNESDAY NIGHT PRESENTATION on October 22, 2014. His topic will be “Our Buried Valley Aquifer,” the main source that supplies drinking water to an estimated 1.6 million people in Southwestern Ohio. Mr. Ekberg is the Manager of MCD’s Water Monitoring Program. He oversees all MCD hydrologic data collection. MCD’s hydrologic data collection networks include precipitation observers, tipping bucket rain gages, stream-gaging stations, observation wells, monitoring wells, and automated river sampling stations. He’s also responsible for, providing forecasted river stage data during high water events to their field staff and recording water storage and peak river stage at MCD dams and flood protection features.

He received a BS degree in Geology at Lehigh University in 1989, and received an MS degree in Geology at the University of Cincinnati in 1991. He began his professional career working for the environmental consulting company Dames and Moore in Cincinnati. While there he worked on projects that revolved groundwater monitoring and remediation. In 1993, he went to work for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) in the Southwest District Office in Dayton, Ohio. While at OEPA, he continued to work on projects that involved groundwater monitoring and remediation at landfill and manufacturing sites. The Ohio Source Water Protection Program was just getting underway in the early 1990’s, and he began to take a lead role in the Southwest District Office working with public water systems to implement source water protection plans in Southwest Ohio. In 2000, he accepted his current position as manager at MCD.

His presentation will take place at the MOUND SCIENCE AND ENERGY MUSEUM, 1075 Mound Rd., Miamisburg, OH, on October 22, 2014, at 7:00 PM. Presentation is free and is open to the public.
