MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS

NUCLEAR ELECTRICITY, NUCLEAR BATTERIES, AND NUCLEAR HOMICIDE — This is a presentation on the use of four radioisotopes that Carl Bishop worked with during his career as a chemist. Uranium-235 is used in atomic bombs and nuclear reactors. Plutonium-238 is used in nuclear batteries. A rather unique use of polonium-210 was to poison a former Russian KGB agent. Thorium-232 will also be discussed.

A few individuals associated with these applications will be pointed out. Also interesting anecdotes relating to the four isotopes will be given.

Carl Bishop taught chemistry before spending 26 years of his career at Mound. After retiring from Mound in 1993 he spent 6 years at Fernald. He then taught math and chemistry at Miami University Hamilton on a part-time basis, and is still teaching there.

Carl started bicycling to work at Mound in 1975, and still bicycles to school, as well as bicycling “all over the place” in the Cincinnati/Dayton area.
