Carnegie Building in Downtown Miamisburg

Carnegie Building in Downtown Miamisburg

Mound Laboratory and the Mound site, located at southern edge of Miamisburg, between Dayton and Cincinnati, in Southwestern Ohio, hold significant places in the history of the Nuclear Age and in the hearts and minds of the dedicated scientists and workers who labored there for more than 50 years. The people, the plant, their research and manufactured items were at the leading edge of the Nuclear Age in the United States. Mound built components went with NASA to the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the sun reliably powering their instruments and keeping them at operational temperatures. They are still continuing in the same vein into interstellar space.

MSEMA partnered with Dayton History to provide professionally created displays that better educate visitors to the Museum about the important work done at the site that helped win the Cold War. In honor of that effort the Museum was named the “Mound Cold War Discovery Center”. In addition to the exhibits, significant emphasis was placed on educating the public. Due to DOE funding of the MCWDC’s operations ending in September 2025, most of the exhibits will be moved to Carillon Historical Park, per our founding agreement. The MCWDC will no longer be available to the public after August 9, 2025.

The local community recognizes the importance of accomplishments that not only helped win the Cold War, supported space exploration, but also supported the community in so many ways. Consequently, the City has provided space in the historic Carnegie Library Building to maintain a local presence honoring those accomplishments . The Miamisburg Historical Society has started a project to renovate the building with completion expected in the Fall oof 2026. The Mound Science and Energy Museum Association has started a fund raising campaign on this website to support the creation of exhibits to fulfill our mission in the Carnegie Building.

The MSEMA’s Vision

To interpret the Nuclear Age through the lives, the work and the communities of Mound employees in the Miami Valley.

The MSEMA’s Mission

  • Preserve artifacts, printed documents, graphic materials, etc., related to Mound’s heritage
  • Communicate to local and wider constituencies the historical importance of the work and achievements of Mound and its Dayton Project predecessor
  • Be a source of scientific/technological information and expertise for local schools, colleges, research units and other agencies and individuals
  • Participate with local, regional and national entities on projects of mutual interest.

The MSEMA will continue to support these goals with the establishment of the new Mound Discovery Center in the Carnegie Library Building. The local presence of this Museum will continue to serve the community highlighting the significant accomplishments at the Mound site and by providing educational opportunities for students of all ages.
