Summary

A Basic Understanding of Sound, Room Acoustics, Loudspeakers, and Free Lunches Mark Beach will provide an interactive overview of electroacoustic transducers starting with an intuitive understanding of sound and its interaction with room geometry. The overview will move on to the types of electroacoustic transducers and focus on the voice coil driven transducer patented by Rice and Kellogg (GE, RCA) in 1925 and proceed to understanding the Thiele-Small parameters (TS) of 1961 and 1972 which advanced the science by modeling sealed and vented loudspeaker models. The last major advancement was loudspeaker nonlinearity advanced by many but led by Klippel in the 90’s. The overview will end with loudspeaker systems, their design, advantages/disadvantages, and tradeoffs.

Speaker’s Biography

Mark Beach is founder and president of Beach Dynamics and is very active in Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International (ALTI: https://altiassoc.org/).

Specializing in acoustics, vibrations, and modal analysis, Mr. Beach graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1984 and formed Beach Dynamics which consulted to various industries including GM, Electramotive, NASA, Ford, P&G, and others.
