MOUND MUSEUM QUARTERLY REPORT
QUARTERLY REPORT – JANUARY 2015 — Several members of the Museum Board are periodically meeting with management personnel from DOE Legacy Management, the Mound Business Park, and the Dayton Historical Society related to plans for the long range funding and operation of the Museum.
Personnel continue to visit the Museum on Tuesday afternoons, Saturday mornings, or by appointment. Recent groups of visitors included six members of the local Cold War Patriots’ Organization (on September 18) and 24 members of the Miamisburg High School Local History Class (on December 18). Former employee Dan Grove visited and loaned the Museum two artifacts for display (models of the Apollo Lunar Heater and the SNAP 27 Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) and donated several technical publications.
Improvement of the Museum’s displays are continuing with emphasis on Mound’s accomplishments in the explosives area. Help has been solicited from former employee, Walt Schurman. Also planned is a request for assistance from former employees now at Excelitas, a commercial company located on the Mound site. The Health Physics display is being updated by Marybeth England. A new exhibit on the history of the early building construction efforts is being developed by Ken Phipps.
Presentations during the reporting period included:
– On September 24, former employee Mark Sizemore discussed the history and planned demolition of the Dayton Power and Light (DP&L) O.H. Hutchings Station Power Plant.
– On October 22, Mike Ekberg of the Miami Conservancy District discussed “Our Buried Valley Aquifer” the main southwestern Ohio source of drinking water.
– On November 19, Jennifer Watson of the Miami Valley Regional Crime Laboratory spoke on “Forensic Science, It’s Really Nothing Like CSI.”
– There was no December presentation due to the Christmas holidays.
Monthly presentations have been scheduled for the last Wednesday of January, February and March of 2015.
The Museum is planning to participate in Sinclair College’s “Techfest” on February 14 and 15, 2015. Mound’s involvement in the space program will be displayed. Richard K. Flitcraft II, passed away on December 15 2014. Dick was a valued MSEM Board member and formerly served as the Board’s Chairman. He served as the Director of Mound Laboratory (1972-1974) and served as President of Monsanto Research Corporation (1972-1984). At the request of the family, there were no public funeral services. A memorial service is being planned for Spring.
