MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS

KING OF THE KUIPER BELT: PLUTO — The Mound Science and Energy Museum (MSEM) is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, Ms. Cheri Adams, Director of Astronomy at Dayton’s Boonshoft Museum of Discovery and MSEM’s Doug Gabriel will be our guest speakers at our next Wednesday Night Presentation. Their topic will be: “King of the Kuiper Belt: Pluto.”

NASA’S New Horizons space probe departed from Earth in 2006 when Pluto was considered one of the solar system’s regular nine planets. In this presentation we will review the discovery of Pluto, what we currently know of this icy world, and consider why it has lost its planet status. We will also contemplate a theory of how this dwarf planet ended up orbiting the Sun 40 times farther out than Earth and examine the new images provided by New Horizons as it travels within 8,000 miles of Pluto on 14 July 2015.

Ms. Adams earned a BS/ED in Secondary Earth Science from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Upon graduation she taught junior and senior high school science courses in rural Missouri where the skies are still remarkably clear. She joined the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in 1994 as the Assistant Director of Astronomy and became the Director of Astronomy there in 2000. She also served as President of the Great Lakes Planetarium Association. Our own Doug Gabriel will give a short run-down about Mound’s role in providing power for the New Horizons space probe.

This presentation will occur on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the Mound Science and Energy Museum, 1075 Mound Rd., Miamisburg, Ohio 45342. The museum is located directly across Mound Road from the historic Adena Indian Mound. For additional details and a map showing the location of the Museum visit MSEM’s web site at: http://www.moundmuseum.com or call us at: (937) 353-4457. This timely presentation is free and is open to the public.
