Improving the Groundwater Quality at Mound Site

MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS

IMPROVING THE GROUNDWATER QUALITY AT MOUND SITE — Ms. Gwen Hooten, U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Legacy Management(LM), will be the next guest speaker in the MOUND SCIENCE & ENERGY’s monthly WEDNESDAY NIGHT PRESENTATION on March 25, 2015, at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Hooten will explain how DOE’s phase-combined remedy approach for the Mound Site Operable Unit-1 area is showing signs of reducing the VOC groundwater contamination that originally put the site on the Superfund list. She will provide a brief history of the Operable Unit-1 area and of the studies and cleanup activities that have occurred over the years, as well as describe how LM recently teamed with experts from the DOE Savannah River National Laboratory to design and implement a strategy called the Enhanced Attenuation Field Demonstration to inject edible oils into groundwater areas to accelerate the natural attenuation process. Natural attenuation is the breakdown of contaminants due to physical, chemical, and biological processes which occur in the environment.

Ms. Hooten has been with DOE since 2011 and has served as the Mound Site and Fernald Preserve Manager for several years. Before coming to DOE, she worked for the Department of Defense for 3 ½ years as a Design and Construction Engineer and worked 16 years for the Environmental Protection Agency as a Remedial Project Manager. She served as a Civil Engineering Officer in the Air National Guard for 10 years. Gwen works out of the Legacy Management office in Westminster, Colorado. The presentation will take place at THE MOUND SCIENCE AND ENERGY MUSEUM, 1075 Mound Ave., Miamisburg, Ohio, on Wed. March 25, 2015, at 7:00 PM. The free event is open to the public and has ample parking. For more information, please check our web site at: http://www.moundmuseum.com. Light refreshments will be provided.
