Exploring Bismuth Crystals
MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS
Summary
Join us for a collaborative presentation on bismuth, bismuth crystals, and Mound Laboratory. Three organizations will join forces to tell the tale of Mound’s bismuth crystal donation of 1972.
Bob Bowman will explain the chemistry and application of bismuth, a metallic element, and its role in Mound Laboratory’s polonium process work.
Jaclyn Miller will speak on how an e-mail turned into a research adventure which led to forging a renewed relationship between two local museums, and the wonderful rediscovery of a bismuth crystal donation made by Mound Lab to the Smithsonian and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.
Special guest, Anna Helmig, will talk about Dayton Society of Natural History’s one and only bismuth specimen. The crystal is one of hundreds of specimens that will be exhibited in the DSNH’s forthcoming Bieser Room of Wonders.
