Roles of Testing Laboratories in Ensuring Safety, Compliance, and Sustainability in the Medical Device Industry
MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS
Summary
The medical device industry is governed by strict standards to ensure that both new and reprocessed devices meet safety and product quality requirements. Testing laboratories, such as Bioscension, provide critical microbiological and chemical data that helps manufacturers validate device designs, sterilization methods, and product quality to meet these standards. Bioscension supports manufacturers and reprocessors by ensuring timely & accurate testing, helping maintain compliance and product safety. Reprocessing devices helps conserve scarce resources, but it is vital that reprocessed devices meet the same safety standards as new ones. Bioscension contributes to such sustainability efforts by ensuring that reprocessed devices undergo thorough testing to maintain high safety and performance standards. This presentation covers: key regulatory standards, essential tests for safety and compliance, challenges face with increased demand, and the role of sustainability in the medical device industry. It will also highlight how testing services support both manufacturers and reprocessors in ensuring safety, quality, and environmental responsibility.
Speaker’s Biography
Jon earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemistry, specializing in organic chemistry, from Wright State University (WSU). He initiated PhD studies in biological sciences at WSU but shifted gears from academia to industry to gain commercial experience working as a quality control analyst at Procter & Gamble’s Fragrance and Home Care Innovation Center and later at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he supported the 711th Human Performance Wing and individuals deployed to handle CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives) incidents. With over 10 years of analytical laboratory experience, Jon founded Bioscension Lab Services, recognizing the profound need for quick turnaround times and reduced test costs in the medical device industry. Under his leadership and through his involvement with internationally recognized standardization organizations, Bioscension has become a key partner in ensuring the safety and compliance of medical devices via the establishment of a laboratory dedicated to providing high-quality microbiological and chemical testing services.
