Radioactive Isotopes: Their Properties and Diverse Applications

MOUND MUSEUM LECTURE SERIES SPOTLIGHTS

Following a brief overview of radioactivity and nuclear reactions, the conventional roles (e.g., in nuclear weapons and power generation) for radioactive materials will be described and will primarily cover the radioactive isotopes polonium-210, tritium, plutonium-238 that were processed at the Mound Laboratory for use as components in weapons, spacecraft power systems, and other devices. Attention will be mostly focused on those items contained in the latest exhibits being installed at the Mound Museum.

Speaker’s Biography
Dr. Bob Bowman is a former Monsanto Mound senior research staff member who retired in 2018 from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and now operates a private consulting business on metal hydride technology. His other prior research positions were at The Aerospace Corporation, Aerojet ElectroSystems, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was also an Adjunct Professor in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah and in 2019 he was a Visiting Professor at the Helmut Schmidt University (Hamburg, Germany). Bob is also a Director on the Board for the Mound Science and Energy Museum Assoc.
