THE HISTORY OF HIGH ALTITUDE PILOT PROTECTION — The Mound Science and Energy Museum (MSEM) is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, Susan Richardson, (USAF, Retired), will discuss “The History of High Altitude Pilot Protection,” as part of MSEM’s continuing monthly Wednesday Night Presentation Series. Susan will be discussing the History of High Altitude Protection for U-2 and SR-71 aircrew members, highlighting Ohio’s contributions to this unique science. She will outline the physiological problems of high altitude flight and the life support equipment needed to overcome them. Discussion will include partial and full pressure suit operations and the complex procedures for launching U-2 & SR-71 aircraft.

Susan Richardson retired from the U. S. Air Force in 2005. She served 26 years as an Aerospace Physiologist, training aircrew members in the physiological hazards of flight, protective equipment, and emergency procedures. Her assignments included supervision of the physiological support of the U-2 and SR-71 high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. She had the opportunity to fly in 22 different military aircraft, including the U-2 above 70,000 feet and NASA’s Zero-G KC-135 (also known as the Vomit Comet). Using the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Susan completed her Masters Degree in Public History at Wright State University in December of 2013.

This presentation will take place at the MOUND SCIENCE AND ENERGY MUSEUM, on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at 7:00 PM. The MSEM is located at 1075 Mound Road, Miamisburg, Ohio 45342.
